Assateague Island is a 37-mile long island along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. Most of the Maryland district is managed by the National Park Service at Assateague Island National Seashore. The State of Maryland manages two miles of the Maryland district as Assateague State Park. The Virginia district is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The National Park Service operates the Toms Cove Visitor Center and a recreational beach within the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
Assateague State Park Beach Wedding Location
Location: 7307 Stephen Decatur Hwy, Berlin, MD 21811. This is the first public gated parking area next to The Five Tides restaurant. The wedding ceremony will be set up on the beach which follows the boardwalk passing the restaurant and the dune crossing.

The park allows temporary ceremony decorations, chairs, and wedding arches as long as they do not require digging into the sand. Open flames are not permitted, and the beach must be left clean after the ceremony.
Assateague Island National Seashore Beach Weddings

Assateague Island National Seashore offers another beautiful setting for couples dreaming of a wedding surrounded by Maryland’s natural coastal scenery. With expansive beaches, rolling dunes, and peaceful ocean views, it provides a memorable backdrop for an intimate wedding ceremony.
While Sunny Beach Weddings primarily recommends Assateague State Park for its convenient access and simpler wedding arrangements, couples may also explore ceremony options within Assateague Island National Seashore.
Wedding Permits and Additional Fees
Unlike Assateague State Park, the National Seashore requires a special-use permit for wedding ceremonies. The National Park Service currently charges a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Additional government fees may apply depending on the event.
Sunny Beach Weddings charges an additional $700 arrangement fee for ceremonies at this location because of the additional planning, travel, logistics, and coordination involved. This fee is separate from any National Park Service charges.
All ceremonies and professional wedding services within the National Seashore are subject to National Park Service approval, applicable permits, and commercial-use restrictions. Our team can discuss available arrangements with couples interested in this location.

How to Get a Marriage License for Your Assateague Island Wedding
Couples planning a wedding on Assateague Island, Maryland, must obtain a marriage license through the Worcester County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
The marriage license currently costs $35, payable in cash. Only one partner needs to appear in person to apply, but identification and the required personal information for both partners must be provided.
Maryland has a waiting period before a marriage license becomes valid. Your license takes effect at 6:00 a.m. on the second calendar day after it is issued and remains valid for six months. For example, couples planning a Saturday wedding should apply no later than Thursday during regular business hours.
If you live outside Worcester County and cannot visit the Clerk’s Office before your wedding, a non-resident marriage license affidavit process may be available. Contact the Clerk’s Office to confirm the requirements and obtain the appropriate form.
